Clifford the Crocodile Loses his Two Front Teeth by Darrell Warren and Alex Crump and published by Fun Animal Stories is an awesome story about a crocodile called Clifford who doesn't look after his teeth properly. Clifford visits the dentist to see what he can do and that is where it gets interesting. My three year old loves this book and it is brilliant at reminding kids to look after their teeth properly.
Indoor
The first activity could be to make or draw Clifford and then your child/children could be imaginative and use what they want to be Clifford's two front teeth. You could talk about the benefits and disadvantages of what they chose for their teeth and if they are struggling you could walk round the house with them and choose a few things to help them decide. Another fun activity could be to do a teeth cleaning activity. You could do this a few ways. If you have a laminator then you could draw Clifford's teeth and then laminate the picture. If you then draw some dirt on his teeth then your child/children could use a toothbrush to brush Clifford's teeth and make them clean. If you haven't got a spare toothbrush you could use cotton buds or put some cotton wool on the end of a lolly stick for them to use. If you don't have a laminator then you could make a tooth using some card and then put the tooth on a tray and cover it with sand. Your child/children could then use a toothbrush or homemade toothbrush to brush away the sand and make the tooth clean. A final indoor activity could be to play dentists. You could set up a dental surgery and then your child can use some toys and teddies as their patients and they can have their teeth checked.
Outdoor
The first activity could be to fill the paddling pool or a large bowl with water and then add some stones, Lego or other plastic bricks and then your child/children can clean them using toothbrushes. If you have time and are planning to do this activity then you could make the things you put in the water extra dirty so they will take your child/children longer to clean. This will help them become more confident at using a toothbrush and will improve co-ordination. Another fun activity could be to draw some large teeth on the floor and then put some dirt, leaves and twigs on and then your child/children can clean the teeth using a sweeping brush. You should have a nice clean drive/patio when they have finished so that will save you a job. A final outdoor activity could be for your child/children to pretend that they are crocodiles. They can make a pretend swamp, pretend to eat stinky meat and pretend to let the birds clean their teeth for them. A game of make believe is always fun.
Cooking/Food
For a healthy food activity your child/children could make a crocodile out of cucumber. If you cut one end of the cucumber to look like a crocodile mouth then your child/children can use some fruits and vegetables to make the bumps on the crocodiles back and for the eyes. The fruits and vegetables can be attached with cocktail sticks. Another healthy activity could be to make apple teeth. If you cut an apple into slices then your child can use half grapes to put in between two apple slices to make it look like a mouth with teeth. If you wanted to use something other than grapes then you could use cubes of cheese or mini marshmallows. A final activity could be to make a swampy dessert. You could make some green jelly and some chocolate whip and then make it look like a swamp You could always add some jelly crocodiles and that would be a fun dessert for your child/children to help you make and eat.
