Supertato Night of the Living Veg by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet and published by Simon and Schuster is one of a series and is also a TV programme. Supertato and his veggie friends have lots of exciting adventures and in this one they hear a scary noise and go and investigate what it is. The story is exciting and some of the pages have a black background so the writing is white and some of the pages have a white background is the writing is black. The pictures are bright, colourful and engaging and because this one was bought from Tesco it also included a sticker sheet so that is a nice bonus.
Cooking/Food
As the book is about vegetables I thought we would start with the cooking/food related activities first. If you look at the different vegetables in the book you could get hold of some of them and then you and your child/children could prepare and taste them. Some of the different ones include carrots, tomatoes, cucumber and of course potatoes. You could try them raw and cooked and potatoes are brilliant as you could try them all different ways like roasting, boiling, mashed and chips. Another activity could be to get some little potatoes and then make it look like Supertato by using pipe cleaners for the arms and legs, black paper for the belt and mask, a bit of red cloth for the cloak and some googly eyes. You could use some white paper for the mouth and if you have a few potatoes then your child/children could make Supertato with different facial expressions. A final food related activity could be to choose 5 different vegetables and include them in a meal. You can prepare this with your child/children and they can help with the washing, chopping and putting the vegetables in the pots and pans or on the plate. My 3 year old loves making mash and he then serves it and eats what is left over in the pan.
Indoor
The first activity could be to do some vegetable printing. Cut up a couple of vegetables and then give these to your child with some paper and some different coloured paint on a plate. Your child can then use the vegetables to make some prints on the paper. They could even paint the vegetable from the story using the vegetable you gave them. They could paint Supertato with a potato or paint carrot with a carrot. Another activity could be to make the different vegetables using paint or different coloured paper. Your child/children could then imagine an adventure for their vegetables to go on. A final activity could be to make some evil peas. The pod could be made by painting a paper plate green and then fold it in half. Then make the peas by either making card circles and painting them green and adding faces or by scrunching up green paper and then the faces could be painted on or googly eyes could be added.
Outdoor
A fun activity could be for you to put some vegetables that need washing into a bucket of water along with some sponges and brushes and your child/children can was them for you. They will have lots of fun with this and it saves you a job. Another activity could be to plant some vegetable seeds and then your child/children can help water and look after them and then they can pick them or dig them up when they are fully grown. A final outdoor activity could be to go to a market and have a look at the different vegetables available. Your child/children could then choose a new vegetable to buy that they haven't tried before.
