Postman Bear by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler is C's all-time favourite book right from him being little. It's a simple but lovely story which rhymes and has flaps to lift and open. The story is simple and involves counting which is always a bonus and the pictures are bright and colourful and fun to look at. Bear delivers his letters which are invites to his birthday party so we always sing Happy Birthday to Bear when we get to the last page.

Indoor
The first activity could be for your child/children to make some invites. These could be for a real party or for a pretend one. If it is a pretend party then your child/children could invite their toys. This is a good time to practice letter writing and what important information is to be included on the invitation. Another fun activity could be for your child to make some party decorations. They could make banners, paperchains and hats for their guests. Banners are nice and easy. Your child/children could paint or draw on a large piece of paper and then this can be hung up using tape or string. Paper chains are made with strips of paper linked together and then just use a bit of sticky tape to join the loop together and hats can be made with card cut into a circle shape and then cut a line up to the middle and fold round to make a cone shape. Tape the seam and then add some string or elastic to go under the chin. Your child/children could pick a theme for their party and draw or colour the card before the hats are made so they are nicely decorated. A final activity could be to play some party games like musical bumps or pass the parcel.
Outdoor
If the weather is nice then you could have an outdoor party with your child/children. They could make some of the decorations from the indoor activities and then you could do the party as a picnic and they could invite real friends or just toys. They will have just as much fun using their imagination. Balloons are lots of fun to play with so you could blow some balloons up and then play the game where the balloon has to be passed to each other but hands can't be used. This is lots of fun and gets everyone who is playing thinking. If you all get good at it you could maybe put a timer on or eliminate other parts of the body that can't be used. A final activity could be to take your child/children to post their invites like Bear did if the invites are real.
Food/Cooking
As it is Bear's birthday it would make sense to make a birthday cake this can look like the one in the book or your child/children could decorate theirs how they want. If you are going to do a party then your child/children could get involved with the preparing of the food. They could help make sandwiches, could cut veggies with supervision and then put the food on the plates so that it looks nice. A final food inspired activity could be to make bear toast. This is nice and easy. Make toast like normal and then spread peanut butter, jam or chocolate spread on it and then make it look like a bear using banana, raisins, blueberries and strawberries. Your child/children could be as imaginative as they want with what fruits/veggies you provide them with.
