How Monty Found His Magic - a story about magic, friendship and doing things together

How Monty Found his Magic by Lerryn Korda and published by Walker Books is a brilliant book about magic, friendship and confidence. The book is nice to read, easy to follow and some important words/sentences are written in bold which is a nice touch. The pictures are nice to look at and you fall in love with the characters very quickly. We borrowed this book from the library, and we have read it many times due to it being such a good book.

Activities

  • Perform magic tricks

  • Posters of doing activities alone and with friends

  • Make a top hat and wand

  • Outdoor magic show

  • Go and see a magic show

  • Build a card house

  • Breadstick wands

  • Magic chocolates

  • Rabbit in a hat

Indoor

As the book is all about magic the first activity could be to find the right costume to wear and then practice and perform some magic tricks. There are many ways that your child/children can learn magic tricks, including using a magic trick book or by watching videos or by asking other people. Many people know at least one trick that could be used in their show. Your child/children could come up with a name for their magic show and make some tickets to give to the people attending. Another fun activity could be to do two posters, one with a photo or drawing of them by themselves and then another one with them along with friends or family and then they can write or draw around the pictures or photos of things that they can do alone and then with other people. You could discuss with them the different activities and how sometimes it can be fun to do things alone and sometimes it can be fun to do things together. A final indoor activity could be to make a top hat and wand. The one in the picture I made with C and it has been very well worn. I cut a circle out of some cardboard and then measured it against C's head and turned it into a ring. I then rolled and attached two pieces of black card together and then cut slots in one side and bent these out and then I attached this to the ring. The top bit was the hardest, but I cut a circle to of black card and then cut slits again to attach it on to the hat. I was quite happy with the top hat but C thinks it's brill ad that's the main thing. To make a wand you can cover a pencil or stick in black paper and then put a bit of white at each end.

Outdoor

The first activity could be to do an outdoor magic show. They could set it up themselves and put cushions or chairs out for their audience to sit on. Another fun activity could be to take your child/children to see a magic show. You could look to see if one is taking place near you or sometimes people do magic shows in cities so your child could get some ideas for their own tricks. A final outdoor activity could be to have a go building a card house (this activity could be done indoors too). It's easier to do outside as there is more space but this could be a more difficult thing to do on a windy day, but it could be more fun. Your child/children needs to build a house with playing cards.

Food/Cooking

An easy thing to do is make breadstick wands. You could make breadsticks, or you could just buy them (like I do) and then dip each end in cream cheese to make it look like a magic wand. A nice easy but fun food activity. You could also use celery sticks or a stick of liquorice and put some icing at each end. For a sweet activity you could get some different sweets, chocolates and raisins and cover them in melted chocolate. Once they are dry you could put them in a cup and then your child/children can guess what they are eating. If you don't have the time, you could just use Revels as they are a similar idea but less messy. A final activity could be to make some jelly and stick two orange pieces sticking out of it for rabbit's ears.
