Incy Wincy - a classic nursery rhyme about a spider

Incy Wincy is a classic nursery rhyme and this book is illustrated by Kat Uno and published by Igloo Books. Incy Wincy is a lovely little book and it tells the story of the rhyme through the book and includes bright, colourful and child friendly pictures. The pictures have other bugs on their pages and my son likes to look at hat the different bugs are doing. The spider also shows different expressions on his face so we like to recreate them and talk about how the spider is feeling.

Activities

  • Spider web hunt

  • Create your own spider web

  • Outdoor spider play station

  • Spider burgers

  • Spider spaghetti and meatballs

  • Spider cookies/biscuits

  • Spider fruit

  • Spider web assault course

  • Create a spider web from paper

  • Blow painting spiders

  • Indoor spider play station

Outdoor

I thought that we would start with outdoor activities first as the book is set outside. The first activity could be to do a spider web hunt either in the garden or out and about. This activity works well in the summer (and the spider might be sitting on it's web) or in the winter, especially if it is frosty because the webs show up really well. Your child/children could look at the web's different shapes and where the spider has decided to spin it. They could try and guess why they chose that particular place and it would be a good time to talk to them about being kind and not breaking the webs on purpose and how clever the spiders are being able to make them. Another activity could be for your child/children to create their own web using wool, thread or string. They can choose where they want to weave their web and you could maybe give them a set time that they have in order to weave their web. A final outdoor activity could be to set up a spider play station. You could put sticks and hay/straw in a tub or corner of the garden and then add some toy spiders and your child/children can play and explore the different textures.

Food/Cooking

For a savoury and fairly easy spider inspired food you could make your child/children a burger and turn it into a spider by using chips for the legs and then you could use pickles or tomatoes or even tomato sauce (just blob it on) for the eyes. if you wanted you could provide your child/children with the ingredients and get them to put a spider burger together. Another savoury dish could be to make spaghetti and meatballs. The spaghetti could be the web and the meatballs could be the spiders. If your meatballs are fairly big you could use peppers (or something similar cut into thin strips) as legs for the spiders. A sweeter dessert could be to make (or buy, there is no judgement here) some cookies/biscuits and your child/children can decorate them using different sweets and icing pens. If you wanted something a bit healthier then you could get your child/children to make a dessert look like spiders using fruit. They could use an orange for the body and strips of apple for the legs for example.

Indoor

There are lots of fun indoor activities to go along with this book. You could create a spiderweb assault course for your child/children to try and get through. This could be fairly simple and you could use masking tape and turn a door frame into a spider web or you could be more inventive and use chairs, tables or if your house has a big room you could make a web where your child/children have to make their way across the whole room. Another activity could be to make spider webs like you make snowflakes at Christmas. Cut a white piece of paper into a circle shape, fold it in half, find the centre and then fold again to form a triangle. You can fold it again if you wish and then cut out shapes and when you open it out it will look a bit like a spider web. This is a really good activity for improving scissor skills. Your child could then make a spider to go on their web using paper or card etc. Another fun activity could be to do some blow painting. If the paint is a bit watery then it blows better so you could always add a tiny bit of water if the paint isn't blowing very well. Put a dollop of the paint on some paper and then get your child to blow the paint through a straw and it should spread and look a bit like a sider. When they have finished blowing they could add eyes to their spiders or cut them out and create a web for them. A final indoor activity could be to create a spider play station (similar to the one outside) but you could use string or thread and then your child/children could play with the spiders. If you have some toy flies you could throw them in too or if you have a spider predator then your child could get their spider to hide from them.
