Maisy's Sports Day by Lucy Cousins and published by Walker is a bright colourful book about Maisy, who is a mouse and her friends ,who are all different animals taking part in Sports Day. The story is fun, lots happens and it is nice and easy easy to follow. C has just had his first Sports Day so I thought it would be a good book to do. His favourite was the egg and spoon race so that's what we decided to put on the photo. We borrowed this book from the library and it was definitely a good choice.

Outside
The book mostly takes place outside so I thought I would do the outdoor activities first. C ended up having his inside due to rain so you could always do these activities inside if you have to. Different sports take place in the book in two teams so you could always invite some more children over to take part if you need to or you could just go against your child/children. The first activity is to do warm up and stretches then the egg and spoon race. This is a nice easy one as you just need a spoon and egg. Eggs can get messy so you could use a potato or small ball instead, half of the fun is picking it up when it drops off anyway. For the race you need to put the egg on the spoon and make it to the finishing line first to win. The next activity is the wheel barrow race where one person holds another persons ankles and that person walks on their hands. This is a good teamwork race. Then the hula hoop. If you have hula hoops available then you can do a competition of who can spin their hula hoop round their waist the longest. You could always have some fun with this and spin the hula hoop on arms or legs etc. The next race Maisy did was the sack race. If you don't have any sacks available then you could use pillow cases. Then just race like normal but in the sack so it turns into a jumping race. The three legged race is always fun. Two people tie their legs together to make one leg and then they both have to run together. This is a good teamwork race and is definitely fun to watch. You could then come up with some ideas for races with your child/children that they can think of and they can be as inventive as they want.
Food/Cooking
The first food activity could be to do an egg and spoon inspired dish. If you hard boil some eggs and cut them in half then these can be put on a spoon. These will make a good snack and are fun. If you do these blog activities around Easter time then you could put chocolate eggs on instead. In the book Maisy and her friends have an apple and some juice for a snack so you could do this with your child/children. A final Sports Day inspired food could be to put different foods on a tray in a line so your child has to eat them in order from the start to the finish line. You could do this as savoury or sweet foods. This could be fun and you could always throw in something that your child isn't keen on to see if they will eat it so that they can finish the race.
Indoor Activities
The first thing that you could do with your child is to make some trophies out of card for the winner of the race. You could use normal card (if you have some) or card from cereal boxes or card from delivery boxes. Draw a trophy on it and then your child/children can decorate it and you could talk about how bronze, silver and gold work. They can use coloured paper, glitter, paint, crayons etc. to decorate the trophies. Another indoor activity could be for your child/children to do a Sports Day with their teddies/toys. They could choose a toy that they think would be the beat for each race, for example a car for the running race or two teddies for the three legged race. They could always make some mini trophies to present to the toys who win. A final activity could be to create an indoor Sports Day. They could think of some fun indoor activities that they can do that aren't dangerous and they can set it up. Some example could be throwing a ball of socks in a bucket or stand jump where you stand at a certain point and then you jump as far as you can and then put something there and measure how far you have jumped.
