Princesses Break Free by Timothy Knapman and Jenny Løvlie and published by Walker Books is a brilliant story about characters doing different things to what they normally do. A princess decides that she doesn't want to follow the rules and then other characters decide that they want to do different things too. The book has the writing scattered around the page so it is nice and easy to read and the pictures are beautifully drawn and detailed. It's a fun book to read as you don't know what is going to happen next. It makes a fantastic bedtime story.

Indoor
The first activity could be to choose a fairy tale character (this could be from the book or a different one) and then paint or draw them doing something that they don't do in their story. Your child/children can be as imaginative and creative as they want with this. They could choose different characters and maybe paint or draw them doing something together. Another activity could be to look at different fairy tales and come up with different endings. These can be as silly and imaginative as they want. Another indoor activity could be to make some princesses out of card and then attach them onto lolly pop sticks. Then using an old delivery box or cereal box cut a hole in it to be where the puppets can be seen from and then your child/children can decorate the outside to look like a theatre. If you have any spare material this can be glued on each side of the hole to make it look like curtains. Your child/children can then use the princesses on lolly pop sticks and put on a theatre show. A final indoor activity could be for your child/children to tell their own story involving a princess. They could do this on their own or if you have more people they could all have input and see what different ideas they can think of. They could write it down if they wanted and illustrate it like a fairy tale book.
Outdoor
The first fun outdoor activity could be for your child/children to dress as a princess and then act out their own adventure. you could give them some props to use to help them with their imagination if they struggle like something from the kitchen like a spoon or saucepan or you could give them a cuddly toy. Lots of princesses have animals as their friends. If your child/children don't want to dress as a princess they could always dress as another fairy tale character. another fun activity could be to go for a walk in a wood or forest. Your child could have a look around and see what different trees and wildlife they see and they could choose a spot where they would like to build their castle or home and why they would choose that spot. A final outdoor activity could be to make different characters from the story and then hide them around an outdoor space for your child/children to find. You could make these from card or draw the characters on ping pong balls. Don't forget to give your child/children a bucket or bowl to collect their characters in.
Food/Cooking
A bit of a play on words but I thought the first activity could be to make fairy tail cakes. If you just make fairy cakes using a recipe from a recipe book or from the internet and then decorate them with chocolate spread or icing and then you can add a tail. This can be a jelly worm or strawberry laces or a chocolate finger or any other food that you think could look like a tail. You could get a selection and then your child/children can choose which tail they would like to decorate their fairy tail cake with. A healthier option could be to make Cinderella's pumpkins. These are really easy. Just peel an orange/satsuma/mandarin and leave it whole, this is the pumpkin. Then put a stick of cucumber in the top to make it look like a stalk. A final princess inspired food could be to make broomsticks. These can be made with breadsticks or twiglets and cheese strings. Split the cheese string half way up and this the broom part and then stick a breadstick or twiglet in and then this is the handle.
