Stanley's Paintbox by William Bee and published by Penguin is a lovely little book that is bright and colourful and has a simple but educational storyline. The pictures are exciting to look at and the way that the book teaches you how to mix different colours is simple but effective. This has become a favourite in our house and I love hearing my son talking about all the different colours when I hear him reading it to himself.
Indoor
The book is all about painting and mixing colours so a good activity to start with would be colour mixing. You can do this in different ways (or all the ways if you want). You could mix playdough, paint or food colouring. Start with the primary colours (red, yellow and blue) and then let your child/children play around and see what colours they can make. You can also add in black and white to make colours darker or lighter. There are lots of different pieces of equipment mentioned including rollers, brushes, sponges and a mixing stick so you could make these available for your child/children to play with and then add some other pieces in like cotton wool, ear buds and any thing else that you can think of. In the end of the book there is a fantastic castle creation so you could make one of these with your child and you can do this any size you want. Cereal boxes are a fun thing to use and are easy to get hold of or you can use any other sort of boxes. The inside is often easier to paint but you can also cover them in paper if the outside is shiny and can't be painted on. You could get a picture for inspiration or they could just be creative and design their own castle/building.
Outdoor
Water pistol painting is a fun activity and can be done with younger and older children. Put some watery paint in a water pistol (if you are worried about being able to wash it off add some washing up liquid) and then then create some art. You could either put an old sheet or big piece of paper on the floor for them to aim at or you could hang them up (the washing line might work). You could have a few different water pistols with different colours in. You could do some bubbly painting by adding some paint to some bubble bath and let your child/children play and make some pictures. A final outdoor activity is big art. Get some big paper, big brushes, big pots of paint and let your child/children paint big. Don't forget to share your creations.
Cooking/Food
Foods come in all different colours so you could cook or get hold of different coloured foods and do a rainbow food plate. This could involve fruits, or vegetables or sweet things and depending on the shape of the foods you could create a rainbow shape on the plate. Another fun thing to make could be a rainbow cake. If you are good at baking you could make a layered cake and make each layer a different colour or you could make a regular sponge cake and do a coloured topping. Sprinkles are always fun (and messy) and colourful. A final activity could be to mix colours using different coloured jelly. They can have a play around while they are liquid and then when they activity is over they can be put in the fridge to set and then be eaten.
