Superhero Dad and Son - a story about not being ordinary

Superhero Dad and Son by Timothy Knapman and Joe Berger and published by Nosy Crow is a fantastic book about a boy explaining why his Dad is a superhero and all the cool stuff that he does. The story is fun to read, the pictures are bright and colourful and the picture on the front looks like my son's Dad so that is what drew him to the book.

Activities

  • Superhero Dad pictures

  • Superhero Dad collage

  • Design a superhero

  • Watch the Incredibles and positives and negatives discussion

  • Family superheroes poster and people's strengths discussion

  • Make a superhero costume

  • Be a Superhero Helper

  • The Invisibility Game

  • Save the toys

  • Build a lair

  • Breakfast fit for a superhero activity

  • Super foods

  • Superhero pizzas

Indoor

The first activity could be to draw a picture or get a photo of your child's dad (or you if you are the Dad) and then they can draw or write around it why their dad (or you) is super. If it is coming up to Father's Day (and you are not their Dad) then you could get it framed for them and then that is a present sorted and it is a nice keepsake. If your child isn't very keen on drawing or writing around it then you could do a photo collage with your child of them doing things with their Dad (or you). Another fun activity could be to design their own superhero. You could look at some of the superheroes already out there and then they can design their own. You could always design a superhero with them. Another activity could be to watch The Incredibles together and then have a discussion about all the different abilities they have and the positives and negatives. You could then do a poster with your child/children about how their family are all superheroes. It could be good to discuss talents and things that family members are good at because then this helps them to look at people's strengths. For something that requires a bit more imagination your child/children could make a superhero costume. This can be done from using a bin liner and whatever else they have in their art and craft box. If you have more than one child you could get them to do a fashion show and show off what they have created. A final indoor activity could be for them to be a Superhero Helper for a day. They could help others in the house with little jobs and to make it more fun (or a bit competitive if you have more than one child) they could collect a sticker every time they do something to help. You could then get them to tell you how they have earnt all of their stickers.

Outdoor

A fun activity could be to play The Invisibility Game. This is basically Hide and Seek but the person or people hiding pretend that they have superpowers and that they are using the power of invisibility. The seeker could use their x-ray vision to find who they are looking for. Another activity could be to put some toys in a tricky situation and your child/children have to go and save them. You can be as imaginative as you want with this and do something simple like put a toy on the grass and have the grass as lava so the superhero needs to save the toy without stepping foot on it or you could be a bit more extravagant and tie lots of bits of string between two posts and then they have to make their way though the lasers. You can have lots of fun with coming up with different ideas. If you struggle to think of some I'm sure your child/children will help you out. Finally they could build themselves a lair (this could be done inside if your indoor space is big enough). They could do this using furniture, the washing line and old sheets or blankets.

Food/Cooking

In the book breakfast is mentioned so you could have an extravagant breakfast one morning and everyone could help to make it or if your child/children are old enough then they could be in charge of a part of it. If you are trying to encourage your child/children to eat more healthy food then you could get some different foods, put them in individual dishes and then make a card to go with them saying how they are super. For example you did carrots you could draw a carrot with a mask and cape and his super powers are making your heart healthy and helping keep your eyes healthy or you could do a superhero yoghurt and write how she helps you keep healthy teeth and bones. A final food related activity could be to make superhero pizzas. They could design their pizza as a superhero face or shield.
