The Adventures of Paddington - Love Day is based on the books written by Michael Bond. This book is based on the TV episode written by Hannah George and is adapted by Lauren Holowaty and published by Harper Collins. C's favourite programme to watch at the minute is The Adventures of Paddington Bear so when he saw this book in the library he was very excited and he voted that we do this book on our blog this week. The story, as all Paddington bear stories are, is lovely, the pictures are from the TV episode and the writing is nice and clear to read with some words being written bigger or in bold to help emphasize what is happening. I also love that it starts and ends with Paddington's letter to Aunt Lucy just like the TV show ( and just like it should).

Indoor
The story is about showing people that you love them and Paddington has never celebrated this day before so he decides to make everyone he knows Love Day cards. The first activity could be for your child/children to choose some people to make Love Day cards for. They can either do love hearts on them like Paddington did or they can think of something that the person likes whom they are making the card for. Younger children find this difficult so it is a good way of getting them to think about others likes and dislikes and how they might be different to their own. Sometimes when people celebrate Love Day they go to the cinema so you could set up a mini cinema with your child/children. This is quite easy to do. You could make the room dark with the TV in it by closing the blinds or curtains and choose something to watch (you could always watch an episode of The Adventures of Paddington or something to do with love) and then have some snacks. These could be a fruit bowl, popcorn or some little chocolate or sweets. You could even make some cinema tickets for them and have a little number next to where your child/children should sit. A final indoor activity could be to for you to draw lots of different sized love hearts all over a big sheet of paper and then your child/children has to turn them into some sort of animal. This can be lots of fun to do and if your child struggles with animals then they could turn the love hearts into anything they can think of. This will get their creative skills flowing.
Outdoor
Dad is meant to have booked for the family to have a special meal so you could always go out and have a meal as a family. This could be somewhere new or somewhere you have never been before. Don't forget to take some colouring or stickers with you to keep your child/children busy whilst they are waiting for the food to arrive. Another fun activity could be to set up a little café in your garden. You could use a table and chairs and then your child/children could make a menu and then pretend to serve you some food. Another fun outdoor activity could be to deliver the cards that your child/children made for Love Day. They could either deliver them by hand or they could put them in an envelope and deliver them via the post box. If they haven't made any cards they could go for a walk round the local area with you and have a look at where people might spend Love Day near where they live and you could have a chat about why they think people might spend it in that particular place. A final outdoor activity could be for you to write on bits of paper why you love your child/children and then hide them in the garden (or house) for your child/children to find. If you have more than one child you could have different coloured paper for each child so they know which coloured paper they need to look for.
Food/Cooking
If you set up a café in your garden you could always get your child to make some sandwiches and little cakes with you and then they could serve these for lunch or tea. They can pretend to be a waiter or waitress and you can relax and get served. Paddington Bear loves eating Marmalade sandwiches so you could make some marmalade sandwiches with your child to have for lunch or tea or even just as a snack. A final food related activity could be to make some Love Day biscuits just using a simple biscuit recipe, cut the biscuits into heart shapes and then your child/children can decorate them using pink/red coloured fruits and sweets. If you don't have any icing available to stick the decorations on you could always use strawberry or raspberry jam. If you wanted to do something a bit more savoury then you could make a heart shaped breakfast like Mr Brown makes for Mrs Brown in the story.
