The Night the Moon went Missing -a story about the moon hiding because she feels unwanted

The Night the Moon went Missing by Brendan Kearney and published by Dorling Kindersley (Penguin Random House) is a fab little story about the moon feeling jealous of everyone wanting to spend time in the sun but then when she comes out everyone goes in. She doesn't realise that she is actually missed when she goes missing but can she be found again? The story is captivating, the pictures are beautiful and it's just a lovely story to read.

Activities

  • Look at the moon

  • Moon rocks activity

  • Moon walk

  • Moon biscuits/cakes

  • Jaffa Cake moons

  • Cheese and biscuits moons

  • Fruit rockets

  • Draw the moon

  • Moon's feelings discussion

  • Make a spaceship

  • Paint the moon

  • Sun and moon picture

Outdoor

My son absolutely loves looking at the moon so the first activity could be to go out in the dark and have a look at the moon. If you do this over a period of time you could talk with your child/children about how the moon is different shapes and they could see it change shape as they look out for it each night. Another activity could be to collect some large stones or small rocks and then your child/children could paint them to look like the moon. They could then hide them in sand and soil to make the moon change shape and you could talk about the different phases of the moon with them. You could always get a sheet or a book with the moon phases in so your child/children can copy them with their moon. A final outdoor activity could be to pretend to walk on the moon in space. Using chalk you could draw a big moon on the floor for them to walk on. They can then pretend to put on their space gear and they can fly to space, land on the moon and have an imaginative adventure.

Cooking/Food

You could make some biscuits or cakes (or buy them, there is no judging here) and then decorate them to look like the moon. Your child/children could either decorate them as the full moon or they could do them as the phases of the moon. For the sky you could either use black icing or chocolate spread would look just as good. For those of you that are slightly older you might remember the Jaffa Cake advert where the teacher teaches the children the phases of the moon by eating Jaffa Cakes. This is educational and you get to eat Jaffa Cakes so it is a win win if you ask me. For a savoury activity you could do some cheese and biscuits and these can also be eaten as the phases of the moon. A final moon inspired food activity could be to make some fruit rockets. If you cut up some different fruits and then give your child a cocktail stick or drinking straw then they could put the fruit on to make it look like a space rocket.

Indoor

If you can see the moon from the window then the first activity could be to draw the moon. If you do this activity with your child/children then they will see that it changes shape and they can draw how it looks each night they look for it. You could talk with your child about how the moon was feeling when she decided to go missing. Another activity could be to make a spaceship to fly to the moon. You can be as creative as you want with this but if you are planning to do this activity then you can collect some recycling for your child/children to use and then they will have lots of choice. Plastic bottles, cereal boxes and yoghurt pots are all things that they could use to make their spaceship. If you provide them with coloured paper, felt tips/crayons, scissors, sticky tape and glue then they can get creative and make their spaceship. A final indoor activity could be to paint the moon. Your child/children can decide what shape moon they want and then if you scrunch up some foil and get some grey paint they can paint using the foil and this will give their moon a textured look. If they wanted they could always do their moon on a black background and then they could add in some stars if they wanted. Another fun thing to do could be to half the paper and then they could do the sun on one side in the sky and then the moon on the other side in the sky. This would look really effective and your child/children could think about what they see in the day and at night and they could add these to their picture.
