The Way to Treasure Island - a story about a very different daughter and dad going on an adventure

The Way to Treasure Island by Lizzy Stewart and published by Frances Lincoln Children's Books is a fantastic story about a dad and his daughter who are opposites but have fun together even though they are so different. They decide to go on an adventure but realise that it is difficult working together as they are so different. The story is lovely, it is fun to read and the pictures are beautiful. They are bright colourful and very detailed. This book is a must have for children who like adventures and it is perfect for showing how it is good to be different and how we can learn from each other.

Activities

  • Make a treasure map

  • Find hidden treasure

  • Make a boat

  • Draw/paint what is seen on the adventure

  • Outdoor adventure

  • Scavenger hunt

  • Blindfold game

  • Chocolate treasure chest

  • Pizza map

  • Bananas and custard

Indoor

The first activity that would go well with this book is to make a treasure map. The treasure map in the photo came from Pirates Colouring Pages – Inspiring Kids World if your child/children wanted to colour one in rather than make their own. If they wanted to make one they could add all exciting places on to visit and you can make it look old by rubbing some wet tea or coffee over it. We rolled ours up and tied some string round it so you could always do that too. Your child/children could then use their map to find some hidden treasure. We have used old coins as treasure but you could use anything, even chocolate coins if you wanted but don't use chocolate coins and old coins at the same time as you don't want your child/children to get confused and eat the wrong ones. Another fun activity could be to make the boat that they are going on the adventure with. You could do this two ways. The first way is to get a massive cardboard box or tub that they can sit in and make the boat around them. The other way is to make a small boat using cardboard and then use little people like Duplo characters or other little people toys you have and they can be the people on the boat. Your child/children could make a flag and telescope to take on their travels. A final activity could be write or draw or paint what they meet and see on their adventure. They can be as imaginative as they want with this.

Outdoor

The first activity could be to take their map outside and go on an outdoor adventure like in the book. This adventure could take place on the park, in the garden or just on a walk. Your child/children could look at all the different things they see on their adventure, they could collect things and then you could allow them to find some treasure at the end of their adventure and the treasure can be whatever you want. Another outdoor activity could be to do a scavenger hunt. There are lots of these available online that you can print off and give your child/children to take with them when you go out and about and they can see how many things they can find on the list. A final outdoor activity could be to put some treasure outside and then you or the dad be blindfolded and then your child/children have to guide you to the treasure. This is a good way of children learning directions but also helps them learn working together skills.

Food/Cooking

The first activity could be to make a chocolate treasure chest. You could make some oblong cakes and then slice them in half lengthways but not all the way and then put some treasure in. This could be fruit, chocolate coins or some other chocolate or sweets. If you didn't want to make the cakes then you could buy some mini rolls or something similar and do the same thing with those. Another activity could be to make a rectangular shaped pizza and using different vegetables your child/children could make the toppings look like a map. You could make peppers, mushrooms, sausage and maybe different coloured cheeses available and then your child/children could get creative. A final food inspired activity could be to make bananas and custard. You could put the bananas at the bottom of the bowl as the treasure and then pour the custard on top and your child/children can find the treasure while they are having their pudding/snack. If you wanted you could also add some chocolate coins in to make it more fun (but slightly unhealthier).
