C gets a say in which books I blog about and he has been desperate for me to do Toy Story as this is his absolute favourite at the moment. It is one of my favourite books/films too so I am not complaining. It is about a boy called Andy and when he is not around his toys come alive and have their own adventures. It is a good story as it is about jealousy, how you treat others and learning about who you really are.

Indoor
There are lots of fun activities to go along with this story. The first is to do some dressing up. Your child/children could be one of the main characters (Buzz or Woody). For Woody they could dress up as a cowboy and make a nice shiny sheriff badge out of card cut in a star shape and then cover it in foil. You can easily make a cowboy hat by making a ring of card or paper that fits around your child's head and then make a cowboy hat shape, colour it in and then stick it on. For Buzz his wings and helmet could be made from a cardboard box and then your child can decorate it by using paint or pens. They can do any colours they want but Buzz is white, purple and green. If they wanted to be one of the other characters then they all have parts that can be made out of card. For example Bo Peep's staff or Mr Potato Heads features. You could have lots of fun letting your child/children be creative with dressing up as the characters. Another activity could be to make Buzz Lightyears rocket. You could use card, toilet roll innards and then anything in the art and craft box to decorate it. If you wanted a quick activity then your child/children could make paper aeroplanes and pretend that they are Buzz's rocket and see whose can fly the furthest. You could talk to your child/children about what it must have felt like for Buzz to be in a new place not knowing anyone and then how he felt when he found out he wasn't an actual space ranger. Your child/children could cut out some boot shapes out of some card or paper and then decorate Woody's boots. They could use al sorts of things to stick on them or just use colours and give them a nice design. While you are doing this activity you could talk to your child/children about the jealousy feeling and how it is important to tell someone if they are feeling jealous. You could discuss what made Woody feel jealous and why he felt that way. A final activity could be for your child/children to paint their favourite character from the book and tell you why they are their favourite.
Outdoor
Your child/children could choose a toy and take them on a special adventure out and about. This could be to the park, or a friend/relatives house or just for a walk and then they can get the toy that they took with them to tell all the other toys about their adventure. This is a good skill to help with their recall but they will also have to take more notice of what is going on around them so that they will have something to tell the other toys when they get back. If you have some chalk available then you could draw some planets on the floor and then your child/children could pretend to be Buzz Lightyear or one of the aliens and then they can fly to the different planets and see what is there. Buzz likes to help so there could be a crisis on the planet that he needs to help solve. If your child/children aren't very imaginative then you could put a problem on each planet for them to solve. For example a jigsaw on one, a shoe to lace on another and other little things like that. If you have more than one child then Buzz might take Woody with him and then they would have to work together to solve the puzzles. A final outdoor activity could be to see if the can make and use a lasso like a real cowboy would. They could practise rounding up their cuddly toys or other things in the garden.
Food/Cooking
For a savoury dish you could make some vegetable shaped boots with your child/children (like carrots or peppers cut in a boot shape) and then you could do these with spaghetti as Woody says "There's a snake in my boot". If your child/children are old enough they could practise using a knife or younger children could help put the vegetables in the pan to cook and help serve up when it's cooked. You could make some cookies or fairy cakes and then your child/children could decorate them with Toy Story in mind and they can be as creative as they want. A final food related activity could be to make some fruit cocktails (non-alcoholic of course) with a Toy Story character in mind. If you can get hold of different coloured juices or some food colouring then your child/children could think of a character and then make a cocktail. They might do a pink one for Bo Peep or a brown one for Slinky Dog. This could be lots of fun and will get them thinking and practising using pouring skills.
